Familias Unidas
Familias Unidas is an initiative collaboratively developed by Missio Alliance and Northeastern Seminary, the theological seminary of Roberts Wesleyan University. It aims at fortifying Latino families and churches in the intergenerational transmission of faith in Jesus Christ. This project is backed by a $1.225 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. as part of its Christian Parenting and Caregiving Initiative, a national effort that supports churches and organizations in the discipleship of children and youth by enhancing the role of parents and caregivers. Within this partnership, Missio Alliance leverages its expertise in contextual theology and its connections to Latino communities to create resources, practices, and training opportunities grounded in the lived experiences of congregations.
The project aims to support Latino families - particularly first and second-generation families - in their spiritual development, fostering intergenerational formation that harmonizes faith, culture, and daily life. By creating contextualized resources, facilitating community listening spaces, providing leadership training, and developing the Certificate in the Spiritual Formation of Children and Youth, Familias Unidas endeavors to empower communities to nurture and convey their faith from within the home. This approach is rooted in a core belief: communities inherently possess the resources necessary for their spiritual growth. Consequently, the initiative emphasizes listening, affirming their strengths, and empowering families to take the lead in the spiritual formation of future generations.
