Master of Arts—Theological Studies

The M.A. is a 52-credit program offering a basic theological education, with a solid foundation in biblical studies, church history, theology, and personal and spiritual formation. It is intended primarily for lay persons. Traditionally, it is the degree preferred by those going on to Ph.D. studies or a teaching profession. A capstone research seminar is required of all those enrolling in this degree program. A thesis option is available with faculty approval.

Elective Courses. NES students may take elective courses to enhance their M.A. in Theological Studies from Roberts Wesleyan College masters programs in Counseling, Psychology, Education, Management, and Music on a space available basis, if prerequisites are met.

Masters of Arts in Transformational Leadership


The M.A. in Transformational Leadership is a 53-credit program and is designed to equip Christian leaders in a variety of contexts for faithful, effective ministry to the church and the world. Built upon the foundation of a deep, sustained engagement with biblical and historic Christian thought, the program prepares leaders who are not merely pragmatists, but rather thoughtful, reflective practitioners of leadership that is truly Christian. Students will understand that character is the indispensable foundation of effective Christian leadership and will learn to make their own personal and spiritual formation a priority of their leadership. In addition to their significant work in scripture, theology, and spiritual formation, students will learn models and principles for leadership that are truly transformational. Best practices in Christian ministry and the business world will be explored, and students will have the opportunity to put their learning into practice in a full year internship experience. A capstone research seminar is required of all those enrolling in this degree program.

 

This degree program is designed to enable students to:

  • Provide effective leadership within their organizational context and to understand the essential role of personal and spiritual formation in the life and work of a transforming leader

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the social and ethical demands of leadership and formulate a life-long plan for balanced personal and professional growth

  • Develop a philosophy of leadership grounded in well developed biblical, theological, and leadership realities

  • Enhance their potential by applying transformational principles to the practice of leadership within the context of their vocation

  • Interpret the rapidly changing culture, and design and implement strategic initiatives to meet today’s challenges

Master of Arts in Theology and Social Justice

The M.A. in Theology and Social Justice is a 52-credit program and is designed to equip both pastors and laypersons to work in the areas of local church mission, global justice ministries, social work and social policy to effect change on both the micro and macro levels. Students studying in the program will be exposed to various theological paradigms including, but not limited to, Protestant realism, Catholic social teaching, and liberation theologies and practices. An emphasis on theological reflection and practical application will be at the core of each course and the program as a whole. Students will have an opportunity to work in the area of social justice in one of a variety of settings offered including the parish, parachurch and social justice organizations, and community centers for their field experience.

 

This degree program is designed to enable students to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of biblical texts in relation to God’s call to justice and peacemaking

  • Demonstrate an understanding of various theological paradigms and theories of justice as they relate to faith and social ethics

  • Demonstrate leadership in the church and society in the area of promoting social justice

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the effects of poverty, violence, war, sexism, and discrimination on families, society, and the world

  • Develop skills and apply theology to the practice of social justice and peacemaking both in the church and in other organizations

 

Program Specifics

For these degree programs, students meet on a one-night-per-week schedule as part of a cohort of up to 27 students  for the first two years. One additional year is needed to complete other required courses and field education requirements. NES also offers an accelerated program for students interested in  completing  their degree in two years. Contact an admissions counselor for details.

Requirements

To be admitted as a regular student in any of the Master of Arts programs at Northeastern Seminary, the applicant must:

  1. Have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Complete the application process.
  3. Demonstrate readiness for graduate-level academic work and be approved by the Seminary Admissions Committee.
